Live Music: Cats Elbow

Cats Elbow is an alternative roots rock band based in Ithaca, NY. Founded in 2011, the Elbows have been developing their unique blend of americana from the ground up. With influences that range from Alison Krauss to Steve Earl, and Bad Company to Bad Finger,

Cats Elbow has been weaving its distinctive vocal stylings and old-time harmonies into original pop-rock songs since the very beginning. While most songs originate with one member's vision of a melody and lyrics, none of the songs are complete without the influences of all 6 members. Davina Horrocks, lead singer and chanteuse, brings a classic rock vision to her writing and delivery, while lead songwriter and rhythm guitar player Andy Russell focuses on creating songs from a distinctly more roots-flavored place.

Lead Guitar virtuoso Rob VanVleet has been playing his Stratocaster for many years, and likes to take the road less traveled with his solo and nuanced runs. Rob's guitar work conjures unique alternative melodies, unlike most other traditional lead guitarists in the field today.

Rick Kline, our newest member and amazingly accomplished bass player, has been playing around the Ithaca area for a number of years and brings not only a dry wit but a mature and business-like precision to our rhythm section. Rick has played an integral part in the bands Mike Brindisi & the New York Rock, Li'l Anne & Hot Cayenne, and Bad Alibi to name a few. He supports the band’s harmonic structure with rhythmic and melodic bass lines, while feeding off the ideas played by our extraordinary drummer, Dan Lashkoff. Dan brings with him his lengthy experiences in Northern California, and especially his tenure with San Francisco legends the Naked Barbies. Singer and slide guitarist Todd Edmonds helps contribute a warm southernly vibe to some of the richer songs in the Elbows arsenal.

Though none would say that any of the Elbows' songs are straight-forward rock and roll, they do still rock. Cats Elbow can delight with a sublime delivery of fresh alternative originals, offer velvety smooth blended harmonies on a few older Americana standards, as well as surprise with unique takes on some classic rock delicacies.
